Abstract
1,194,162. Making spindles; corrugating. SIGMA LUTIN NARODNI PODNIK. 9 Aug., 1968, No. 38101/68. Headings B3A and B3E. [Also in Divisions B5 and F1] Apparatus for producing the screw spindles of single-spindle screw pumps from seamless tubes, steel, non-ferrous metals or stainless or plastics materials, comprises a base-plate 20, Fig. 3, secured to a body member 21 having a recess 21 and conical bore 23 which co-operates with shaping-jaws 27 made in three parts urged apart by springs 36, Fig. 4. The shaping-jaws have a tapered helical cavity 28 and are resiliently supported on, e.g. a rubber pad 24 and pressure plate 25. Seamless tube is gradually fed from above and upward pressure applied to the base-plate 20 whence the jaws 27 move radially inwards. As soon as the pressure exerted by the press falls away the upward pressure is released and hence the radial pressure on the jaws. The tube is then fed axially forward and the upward pressure operation repeated. In a modification, the jaws 27 and the bore 23 are tapered with the smaller diameter at the top and in lieu of the rubber pad a helical spring is used. The pressure plate 32 shown in Fig. 3, is then unnecessary. In another modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the tapered bore 23 and tapered outer surface of the jaws are replaced by wedge surfaces, cams or eccentrics and the jaws moved axially and radially by levers. The apparatus may also include a polishing device to improve the surface finish of the screws.
