Abstract

1,270,910. Lapping. MULLARD Ltd. 27 Jan., 1971, No. 3272/71. Heading B3D. A jig for supporting a specimen 8 for a polishing or lapping operation comprises a cylindrical body 2 within which is mounted a specimen holder 7 by means of a spherical bearing 5. The specimen may be a semi-conductor or soft optical crystal or be of metal, glass or ceramic. The body has a foot 3 at one end'for engaging a lapping plate surface. A sleeve 4 is connected to the body by the spherical bearing 5 and is adjustable relative thereto by four screws 6 so as to have its axis parallel or inclined to that of the body. The specimen holder 7 is slidable in the sleeve 4 and is biased away from the foot by a spring 9. A flange is provided for supporting weights to press the specimen held at the other end of the sleeve against the lappings urface. An autocollimator 11 and reference block 12 are provided for setting the specimen in the jig. The spring 9 may be replaced by a rigid sleeve of predetermined length for controlling the degree of lapping.
