Abstract

1501253 Micro-manipulators M G STANTON 1 April 1975 13283/75 Heading G2J A micro-manipulator head Fig. 1 is mounted on a microscope stage 1 Fig. 3. The end of the manipulator head, which so remote from a toolsupporting chuck 15, is mounted in a gimbal support (30), 7 which permits adjustment of the head about two perpendicular axes with respect to the stage 1. The bracket 7 together with an adjustment ring 10, which encircles a forward end-plate 19 of the head, are secured to opposite ends of a base-plate 6, which, in turn, slides over the stage 1 between guides 5 towards and away from the optical axis of the microscope. This sliding action is effected by rotating a shaft 2 and moving a card (not shown) which passes round the shaft 2, two pulley wheels 4a, 4b mounted in the stage 1, and is fixed to a screw projecting downwardly from the base 6, and passing through a slot 1a in the stage 1. In a modification, this movement is effected by means of a rack and pinion mechanism. Coarse adjustments of the angular position of the head are made by turning screws 8, 14 which pass through the ring 10 and engage the plate 19. Fine adjustments are made by rotation of screw 11, for example, which engages a worm-gear 13 encircling the screw 14. Adjustment of the micro-manipulator chuck. Adjustment of the chuck 15 is effected hydraulically. The chuck 15 is mounted on an apertured plate 17, which is advanced or retracted with respect to the optical axis by means of a metal bellows assembly 25 which is filled with hydraulic liquid, preferably water. A second metal bellows assembly 18 supports the chuck 15 on the front plate 19. A mechanism for adjusting the fluid pressure Fig. 4, (not shown) is described.
