[Also in Groups XVI and XXXII] An ultrasonic work machine, which vibrates a tool at ultrasonic frequency in an abrasive slurry to provide means for cutting, boring or engraving hard and brittle substances, such as glass or quartz, comprises an electro-mechanical transducer-tool assembly mounted for linear movement under the action of its mass over a predetermined range of travel, in all positions of which adjustable counter-balancing means are so arranged as to provide a substantially constant and predetermined counter-balance force on the assembly. The tool-assembly (not shown) is carried on a bracket m depending from a vertically-adjustable rod a formed with grooves j which provide bearing surfaces for balls i engaging similar grooves in a fixed housing h; the housing is split to permit adjustment of the friction between it and the rod. A flexible metal link b is secured at one end to the bracket and at the other end to the profile of a cam c which is upwardly-urged about a pivot n by springs d attached to a block e vertically-adjustable by means of a screw g. The weight of the tool assembly can thus be counter-balanced by an amount which is determined by adjustment of the springs d and remains substantially constant during the vertical movements of the tool-assembly by virtue of the variation of force applied by the springs to the cam during its rotation about the pivot n and by the effect of the profile of the cam on the link b. The vertical position of the tool-assembly can be determined by means of a scale k on the rod a and a magnifying lens l on the housing h.
