Abstract

788,280. Shape gauging devices. DECKEL, H., and DECKEL, F. W. May 29, 1956 [June 16, 1955], No. 16575/56. Class 106 (2). A feeler gauge assembly, Fig. 1, capable of being fitted into a rotating shaft 12, such as the spindle of a machine tool, and in which a work contacting feeler 70 is coupled through a linkage mechanism with a rotatable bearing surface 130 so as to be capable of moving said bearing surface axially to and from the spindle 12 to actuate a stationary indicating element or gauge 84, comprises an elastically yielding element carrying the rotatable bearing surface 130 and means acting on this element by which the bearing surface 130 can be adjusted with reference to the axis of rotation. As shown, a taper mandrel 10 may contain three set-screws 132, Figs. 1 and 2, spaced at 120 degrees, and these bear against a recessed part 134 of a bearing-pin 18 for the bearing surface 130. By suitably adjusting these compensating screws the bearing pin 18 can be subjected to a slight elastic distortion whereby the bearing surface 130 will set itself correspondingly with reference to the axis of rotation. Adjustments are made by varying the setting of the compensating screws 132 whilst rotating the yoke 78 carrying the dial gauge 84 until the pointer of this dial gauge no longer shows any deflection. The yoke 78 is supported by the tapered mandrel 10. When a gauging operation is being performed the yoke 78 and its dial gauge 84 may be held stationary by means of a corrugated tube 118 that is secured to the yoke and can be bent to contact a suitable fixed abutment. In a modified construction, the yoke 78 is not mounted on the tapered mandrel 10 but on a bearing bush attached by screws to the bearing-pin 18, there being three compensating screws in the bearing bush acting on the pin 18 to control the setting of the bearing bush with respect to the pin 18. Specification 746,093 is referred to.
