724,996. Rectilinear - motion bearings. SOC. NOUVELLE DE CONSTRUCTION DE MACHINESOUTILS ET D'OUTILLAGE PROCEDES C.W.B. Feb. 10, 1953 [Feb. 20, 1952], No. 3707/53. Addition to 704,301 [Group XXII]. Class 12 (1) [Also in Group XXII]. A rectilinear-motion bearing for relieving the pressure between a sliding part 5 and its horizontal slideways 6 comprises a roller-system adapted to support the part 5 resiliently and run on a roller-way 71 parallel to the slideways and provided on the part 4 having the slideways, the rollersystem being mounted adjustably on the part 5 to compensate for changes in the location of the centre of gravity of the sliding parts due to attaching other parts (not shown) to part 5. As applied to boring and milling machines, the pressure of the headstock 5 is relieved in the slideways 6 which are provided in a slide 4, the latter being adjustable vertically on the column 2 of the machine which is adjustable on the base 1. A pair of rollers 75 in spherical bearings 77 are mounted in blocks 86 fixed to a lever 92 which is pivoted on a shaft 93 in bearings 95, 96 in a housing 127, 143, 144, 97 secured by studs 98 to the headstock. An extension 99 of the lever receives a threaded sleeve 102 having a graduated skirt 103 which bears on a washer 105 arranged on a pin 108 received in the bore of the sleeve 102. A group of spring washers 106 is located between the washer 105 and the base 107 of the pin 108 and can be compressed by rotating the skirt 103. This rocks the lever 92 about the shaft 93, and engages the rollers 75 on the rollerway 71 to relieve the pressure in the slideways. If a part such as a turret head is attached to the front face 70 of the headstock 5, the rollersystem may be moved to the axial location of the new centre of gravity after releasing the pressure on the springs 106. The lever 92 is readjusted on the shaft 93 according to a scale 142 on the housing and a pointer 137 on the lever by a rack-bar 114 attached loosely at its end 113 to the lever and operated by a pinion 122 on a shaft 124 which bears in the forward face 127 of the housing and is adapted to be rotated by a key.
