573,862. Linear-dimension gauges. CURRAN MACHINE TOOLS, Ltd., CURRAN, J., and SHERVINGTON, H. J. Dec. 20, 1943, No. 21293. [Class 106 (ii)] A device for measuring the distance between and/or indicating the parallelism of two surfaces comprises a cross-member carrying a leg formed to bear on one of the two parallel surfaces, a saddle slidably mounted on the cross-member and having a depending leg carrying a plunger which bears resiliently on the second parallel face and is connected to an indicator, and means for locking the plunger and for locking the saddle. The device is suitable for measuring the parallelism of surfaces such as the inclined guide surfaces of lathe beds, and in use preferably has balls or rollers interposed between the parallel surfaces and the feeler members. The resilient plunger preferably has an inclined surface which is contacted by a second plunger arranged at an angle to the first and connected to a dial indicator. The cross-member 1 has a depending leg 2 which contacts the slide surface 5 of a lathe through the roller 4, which is preferably slightly barrel-shaped. The saddle 7, which may be locked on the cross-member by an eccentric 14 carries a plunger 12 which contacts the second parallel face 6 through the roller 13. Movements of the plunger 12 are transmitted by the spring-loaded plunger 10 to the dial indicator 8. The distance between the surfaces 5, 6 may be measured by comparison with a standard matrix, and variations in parallelism indicated by moving the assembly along the lathe bed.
