Abstract

556,498. Linear-dimension gauge. MEADOWS, Ltd., H., HAMILL, W. W., and LINK, R. P. June 1, 1942, No. 7382. [Class 106 (ii)] Comprises a rigid bed on which are arranged as usual a fixed and a sliding head carrying anvils the latter head being adjusted by micrometrical means, characterized in that the bed is provided with a scale unaffected by variations in temperature for co-operating with the sliding head. The bed 1 is mounted on levelling screws and is machined to receive heads 2, 3 adjustable longitudinally on the bed when required. A scale or rule 5 made of steel unaffected by changes in temperature is inset in a groove in the upper face of the bed and is provided with a screw and slotted hole at one end to allow of expansion of the bed. Grooves are also provided in the under surface of the heads to accommodate the scale. Contact pieces 8, 9 for outside and inside measurements respectively are secured to a part 10 adjustably fixed in the headstock 2. The head 3 carries a micrometer measuring means embracing a thread 15 and thimble 17. The carrier spindle 23 is supported in two spaced and bushed limbs 18 rising from the base 13 of the head 3. A dowel peg 19 in the closed end of the bush 20 engages a longitudinal hole in the part 25 and prevents rotation of spindle 23. The nut or thimble 17 is made in two sections secured by screws 28 to provide for taking up wear, or alternatively, the sections may have compression springs interposed between them. Spring ball detents arranged in staggered formation may hold the thimble in adjusted position. The spindle 23 is provided with outside and inside contact pieces 21, 22 to co-operate with the contacts 9, 8 on the head 2. The bed may be provided with a vernier 34 adjusted by a knurled nut 31 on a slide 30 which can be locked to the bed, and a lens 32 pivoted at 33 is provided for reading the vernier. The thimble 17 has a circular scale co-operating with a fixed mark.
