Abstract

1,144,616. Milling machine. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 17 Oct., 1967 [28 Nov., 1966], No. 47193/67. Heading B3K. A milling machine for cutting straight grooves along a cylindrical workpiece 4, 5 comprises a stationary frame 2 for supporting the workpiece, at least one rotary ball screw 26 driven by a motor unit and adapted to cause translational movement of a carriage 20 in a direction parallel to the workpiece, a set of milling cutters 14, 15 carried by a shaft 18 on said carriage and disposed on an axis at right angles to that of the workpiece, a motor unit 33 on the carriage for driving the shaft and cutters, and a coupling unit of variable length, e.g. an hydraulic jack 37, disposed between the carriage 20 and a reaction rod 36, variation in length of the jack causing pivotal motion of the carriage and shaft 18 about the screw 26 to bring the cutters 14, 15 into engagement with the workpiece. A stop screw 47 determines the depth of penetra. tion into the workpiece. Over-penetration is prevented, should the workpiece be twisted, by the distance-piece 50 between the cutters. The machine preferably has two carriage and cutter units as shown.
