Abstract

1383341 Grinding TRI-ORDINATE CORP 23 March 1972 [26 May 1971 20 July 1971] 13541/72 Heading B3D [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for grinding a surface 9 of a workpiece 7, such as the stator part of a Wankel type engine, comprises a cam member 1 having a surface 3 with a changing radius of curvature corresponding to that to be ground on the workpiece, a cam follower 2 engaging the surface 3 at a point 11 lying in a predetermined plane P-1 extending normal to the surface at the point, means for moving the surface of the cam member through the point, means 13, 14 engaging cam member for continuously holding the surface thereof, at said point, normal to the plane P-1, means for fixing the workpiece relative to the cam member for movement therewith, grinding means 8 for engaging the surface 9 of the workpiece, and means supporting the grinding means for movement towards and away from the surface of the workpiece. The cam member 1 is mounted on a support 22 at one end of a spindle 6, the other end of which has a support 23 for carrying the workpiece 7. An intermediate part of the spindle carries a circular bearing plate 24 having its periphery disposed in a housing 25 formed with upper and lower pockets 26, 27 supplied with compressed air or liquid to floatingly support the plate. The inner surface 3 of the cam member 1 is engaged by the follower 2 which is mounted on a shaft 28 driven by a belt drive 31. The cam member 1 is urged towards the follower so as to engage it at the point 11 by guide follower wheels 13, 14 mounted on a spring-urged slide member (17, Fig. 4, not shown). The wheels 13, 14 are in upper and lower planes and engage respective tracks 15, 16 on the cam member so that as the cam member is rotated by frictional engagement with follower 2, the point 11 of contact therebetween remains in the plane P-1, the point of contact between the grinding wheel and the workpiece which is rotated with the cam member likewise staying in the same plane. The grinding wheel is rotated by a motor 35 and is carried by a slide 36 adjustable by a screw 32 to feed the grinding wheel towards the workpiece. The grinding wheel is axially reciprocated by a cam 42 driven by a motor 43, and an hydraulic cylinder 44 is provided for lifting the grinding wheel during loading of the workpiece. In another embodiment the cam member has a single track engaged by a single guide roller.
