Abstract

1350610 Grinding NEWALL ENG CO Ltd 19 April 1971 9839/71 Heading B3D A workpiece 2 is ground to the shape of a cam 6 by rotating the workpiece in contact with a grinding wheel and cyclically varying the angular velocity of the workpiece to reduce variations in the speed at which the point of contact of the workpiece and grinding wheel traverses the periphery of the workpiece. The workpiece 2, Fig. 1, and master cam 6 are mounted on the spindle 3 of a slidable or rockable work-table 4 and co-operate respectively with the grinding wheel 1 and a follower 7 on a fixed support 8. The wheel is movable towards and away from the workpiece by a linkage 10 driven by a motor 9. A pulley 11, Fig. 2, is also mounted on the spindle 3 and a belt 12 passes around the pulley, a spring-loaded pulley 13 and a further pulley 18 driven by a motor 23 and mounted for rotation with a control cam 19 which rotates with the master cam controlling the table 4. The control cam is engaged by a follower 20 on a sliding member or rocker arm 21 having a pulley 17 over which the belt runs. When the follower 20 engages a constant radius part of the control cam 19, the pulley 11 on the shaft 3 carrying the master cam 6 and workpiece rotates with constant velocity. Displacement of the follower 20 by the control cam causes movement of pulley 17 and acceleration or deceleration of the pulley 11 whereby variations in the speed of the point of contact between the grinding wheel and workpiece are reduced. In another embodiment, the control cam is mounted on the spindle 3. In a further embodiment, the control cam and a pulley about which the belt runs are mounted or a pivoted support, the control cam engaging a fixed follower.
