Abstract
1347828 Grinding; milling lenses GENTEX CORP 18 July 1972 [6 Aug 1971] 33483/72 Headings B3D and B3K Apparatus for cutting a lens blank 12 to a predetermined shape by removing material from the edge of the blank while forming the edge to have a cross-section of predetermined configuration, comprising a tool 130 rotatable about an axis, a lens blank support 168 mounted for rotary movement around an axis generally parallel to the tool axis, means for rotating the support, and means for moving the support relative to the tool in rectilinear directions generally parallel and generally transverse to the axis. The lens blank to be shaped is formed to a spherical curvature, is of plastics material, and is clamped on the spherical surface of the support 168 which, together with a cam 14 of the desired shape of the blank, are mounted on the upper end of a shaft 100 rotatable and axially movable in bearings 92, 94 in a carriage 42. Rotation of the shaft at a slow speed, say 2 r.p.m. is affected by gearing 124, 126 from a motor 120 mounted on the carriage. The carriage is slidably mounted on rods 54 secured to a rectangular housing 24 resting on a base plate 22. A cable 64 secured at one end to the carriage and at the other end to a weight 62 urges the carriage to the left, as seen in Fig. 3, to engage the cam 14 with a follower 224 adjustable by a screw 232 and the edge of the blank with a grinding or cutting tool 130 having a surface 132 shaped to provide the desired crosssection on the edge of the blank. In order that the surface may follow the rise and fall of the edge of the blank as the distance between the axes of the tool and blank vary under the action of the cam 14, the shaft 100 is axially moved under the control of a follower 106 on the lower end of the shaft engaging the spherical surface 108 of the same radius as the lens blank on a cam 110 mounted in the housing 24. The lens blank is clamped to the support 168 by a clamp 188 having a thrust washer 194 engaged by a ball 198, in turn engaged by a head 196 on the lower end of a screw 184 in a toggle linkage carried by an upright 174 of a member 140 mounted by radial and thrus tbearings 152, 156 on the shaft 100. During rotation of the shaft, rotation of the member 140 is prevented by a roller 212 engaging a side 40 of the housing 24.
