Abstract

670,905. Cleaning floors; polishing appliances. WHITEHEAD, T. L. Feb. 14, 1950, No. 3781/50. Classes 19 and 138 (i). In an upright vacuum cleaner of the type having a carriage with wheels or rollers whereby the machine may be run over a flat surface and a cylindrical beater or brush removably mounted on a horizontal axis in the mouthpiece of the machine and driven by the cleaner motor through a belt engaging the motor shaft and the beater spindle, the beater is replaced by an appliance which comprises a rotary component having a spindle with bearings at each end with a pulley means intermediate its ends for receiving the driving belt and with a polishing body embracing the spindle on each side of the pulley means, and mounting members fixed or adapted to be fixed in the machine and formed to support the bearings so as to allow, in using the machine, up and down movement of the spindle relatively to the machine. Each end of a spindle 5, Fig. 1, carries the inner journal 9, Fig. 3, of a ball bearing 10 having an outer race 11. The outer races 11 are slidable in channel-shaped grooves 15 of die-cast blocks 12 each having a pair of studs 13, 14 engageable in fixtures at each end of a vacuum cleaner mouthpiece. The bearings. are pressed downwardly towards plates 17, secured to the blocks 12 by screws 18, by springs 19. The springs are centralized at one end by internal bosses 20 of the blocks 12 and at their outer ends they carry pressure pads 21 shaped to fit the races 11. For floor polishing the spindle 5 has fixed thereto by adhesive, two cylindrical rubber beds 6, 7. Circumferentially continuous fabric sleeves 22, 23, of velvet, each having a backing of felt 24 secured to the velvet by stitching 25Àare fitted, by means of a suitable tool, Fig. 4 (not shown), over the beds. The sleeves are of such a diameter that they partially compress the beds 6, 7. Between the beds 6, 7 the spindle 5 carries a pulley 8 for a belt drive from the electric motor of the vacuum cleaner. The spindle 5 may be hollow and mounted on. a pintle with bearings between the spindle and pintle disposed outside the blocks 12. The ends of the pintle would then enter the blocks and be adapted to be held vertically slidable in the grooves 15. Specification 642,316 is referred to.
