Abstract

452,063. Floor treating machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Aug. 27, 1935, No. 24000. Convention date, Aug. 28, 1934. [Classes 60 and 138 (i)] A machine for polishing or similarly treating floors comprises a casing 1, Fig. 4, with a set of brushes 2 or pads on vertical spindles driven by a motor 3 with a horizontal shaft 26 wherein the polishing elements themselves support the motor and casing without castors so that the device can readily be used in confined spaces such as beneath furniture. The handle is adjustable and the polishing elements are detachably fastened to the driving spindles. A handle 4 is pivoted at 5 with a spring latch 44 adjustable in slots 43 in the casing. The polishing devices are mounted on vertical spindles 16-19, Fig. 3, carried on bearings on a horizontal plate 8 on the casing. Spindles 17, 18 are driven by a worm 25 on the motor shaft. Clutches 35-38 of rubber are attached to the vertical spindles and detachably receive the brushes &c. The inner clutches frictionally drive the outer ones and in opposite directions. A conical shaped cup 23 attached to the inner surface of each of the motor wheels 22 carries oil from depressions 34 in the plate 8 through holes 24 to lubricate the worm gear 25. Oil plungers 20 are attached to the upper ends of spindles 16, 19 to prevent leakage of oil. In a modification, Fig. 6, felt polishing discs 61 are used. The felt discs are reinforced with metal 68 embedded therein. Rubber connections 71 engage hollow hubs 72 giving a flexible connection through wide variations in the angle of the polisher to the floor. A sandpaper disc may be substituted for the felt 61.
