Abstract
629,971. Cleaning and polishing machines; rotary brushes; pads etc; stocks. GLAUSER, J. M. June 20, 1947, No. 16412. [Classes 19 and 138(i)] In a cleaning and polishing machine of the kind in which the work, e.g. a boot, is held against a rotating member, such member is fitted freely over an upright driven spindle and is arranged so that downward axial movement of the member brings it into driving engagement with the spindle, means being provided for lifting the member out of such driving engagement. The cleaning or polishing member is preferably provided with a dog or the like at its lower end and the spindle is preferably tapered. As shown in Figs. 1 and 6, a cleaning or polishing member 52, carried on a vertical spindle 18, is mounted above a hollow base-plate 10 and driven by a belt drive 19 from an electric motor 14, the direction of rotation of the spindle being such that the inner side of the cleaning element moves rearwardly. A suction fan 15, also driven by the motor, withdraws dust-laden air from the rear of the machine through and under a louvred plate 17 into the hollow base plate. The air is cleaned by a filter unit 41, the dirt falling into a removable tray 42. The filtered air may be discharged through a port 44 to the underside of the machine. Alternatively the air may be discharged through a port 46 to the upper surface of the baseplate by depressing a lever 49 controlling the linked flap valves 47, 51. The spindle, Fig. 2, is tapered at its upper end and carries a cleaning member which is supported on the spindle by shoulders at the upper and lower ends of an inner sleeve 22. Driving engagement between the spindle and the cleaning member is effected by a dog 21, at the lower end of the inner sleeve, engaging a transverse pin 20 in the spindle. The cleaning member is maintained in driving engagement with the spindle by its own weight. By depressing a lever 29, Fig. 3, a forked member 27 is raised against a shoulder 25 at the base of the inner sleeve, thereby lifting the cleaning member out of driving engagement and loosening it on the tapered spindle. As shown in Fig. 2, one type of polishing member comprises a number of leather discs 23, separated by smaller diameter spacers 24 and clamped on the inner sleeve by a threaded cap 26. Two other interchangeable cleaning members are described (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown), one comprising a leather cylinder stretched between end rings on the inner sleeve, the other comprising a cylindrical brush formed in two halves and clamped between end rings. In a modification (Fig. 7, not shown), the motor and fan are mounted on one side of the machine, a permeable bag is used for dust disposal and supports for cleaning and polishing members not in use are mounted on a top cover plate.
