Abstract
624,153. Rotary engines or pumps. THORGRIMSSON, E. June 25, 1947, No. 16755. Convention date, July 17, 1946. [Class 110(ii)] A rotary casing 8, 12 contains an annular working chamber 10 having a heavy floating piston or abutment 17 which may, in addition to gravity means, be kept in one position relatively to a fixed central shaft 25 by means of external magnets. In the latter case, the piston need not remain in the lowest position in the chamber. The chamber is divided up into sections by hinged vanes 21, spring-pressed outwards, which lie on flats 24 when passing over the inside of the piston 17. For an engine, working fluid is supplied through a conduit 29 and port 31 co-acting with radial arms 33 and exhausted through the arms when they are in line with a port 32 and through a conduit 30. The shaft 25 may be adjusted angularly. The casing may be used as a pulley. The piston may be made of iron or steel and contain lead or mercury. The working chamber may be circular in cross-section and the casing may be made of non-metallic metals or alloys, steel or brass. When magnets are used, they may be externally adjustable. Steam, water, air or gases may be used as working fluids.
