Abstract
563,775. Centrifugal pumps. HARRINGTON, L. B. Feb. 25, 1943, No. 3136. [Class 110 (i)] A pump for producing a vacuum or pressure comprises a rotor 1 communicating at its lower end with a body of liquid 5 and at its upper end with one or more radial ducts 2 having an inner narrow portion 7 and an outer wide portion 8, the chamber &c. to be exhausted communicating through the hollow driving shaft 4 and duct 16 with 8 near the outer end of 7. The ducts 7, 8 may be tangential to the upper part 6 of chamber 9, and the latter may have vanes 10 for lifting the liquid. In the form of Fig. 3, the rotor 26 carrying the ducts 29, 30 is driven by an electric motor 24, and the liquid discharged by the ducts returns to the liquid chamber 18 through pipes 35. Part of the liquid may pass up through a pipe 38 to a chamber 39 in the shaft to lubricate the bearing, and any vapour which separates may pass up through ports 36 into the casing 22 and therein to an outlet 37. In another form, the liquid discharged by the ducts is returned to the centre of the liquid chamber by curved blades in the bottom of the chamber.
