Abstract
623,518. Route indicators. THOMAS, G. S., and STRAY, D. A. May 9, 1947, No. 12616. [Class 3(i)] Relates to route or destination indicators of the type comprising two parallel rollers 30, 31, on which are wound an information sheet 34 which is viewed through an aperture, each roller being driven from a handle through a pair of helical or skew gears 18, 21; 20, 22, the end thrust on the driven gear 21, 22 moving it into or out of driving engagement with its associated roller, one roller only being driven for each direction of handle rotation, the other roller being disengaged. According to the invention the driving gears 19, 20 (not shown), for each of the two rollers are mounted on separate shafts 12, 14 which are contra-rotated. Each of the pairs of helical gears 20, 22; 19, 21 is contained on a two-piece casting 15 which is attached to a supporting plate 1. Each driving shaft 12, 14 is journalled in one of the castings 15 and also in a two-part centrally mounted casting 3 so that they are coaxial and each shaft terminates on the casting in a bevel gear 11, 13, both gears being oppositely driven by a third bevel gear 9 on a handle shaft 8. Each of the driven gears 21, 22 in the castings 15 is attached to a slidable shaft 23, 24, the end of which nearest the roller ends in the male part 33 of a dog clutch and which is biased to the disengaged position by a light spring 35. A stub shaft 26, 27 with a square end for engaging the roller and with the female half 29 of a dog clutch at its other end is also journalled on each casting 15, a collar 32 preventing axial movement. The operating handle 10 may be fixed to either of the shafts 12, 14 instead of to the shaft 8 and the shafts may be arranged other than coaxially if desired.
