Abstract

Screw propellers.-The regenerator blades of a counter propeller are mounted freely in the axial direction and adapted to contact with means on the propeller shaft such as the after face of the boss of the main propeller whereby the thrust from such blades is communicated to the propeller shaft. A positive movement may be provided such as by forming the mounting with a helical or cam feed. The two parts k, k<1> of the regenerator boss carry blades p and have keyways slidably engaging feathers j on a stub axle h which is axially aligned with the main shaft e. The vertical blades f, f<1> are secured to or integral with the stern frame and have elongated holes o through which pass the bolts n securing the flanges l of the boss members k, k<1>. The thrust of the blades f, f<1> is communicated to the frame and that of the blades p through the boss k, k<1> to the main boss and shaft e. Alternatively the blades f, f<1> may be secured to the regenerator boss, when the whole of the thrust is transmitted to the main shaft. Instead of feathers and keys for preventing rotation, the stern post may be shaped to form a stop or the boss and post provided with dog clutches. Alternatively the tips of the vertical blades may have extensions with rollers moving in slots on the main frame.
