[Cla.ss 3 (i)] In destimation &c. indicators of the type in which a display band is wound on and off two rollers which are operated by a spindle, the direction of rotation of which determines which roller is the winding-on roller, two or more bands have their spindles connected to a single shaft so as to be separately and selectively operated thereby in either direction. Fig. 1 shows a shaft 13 which can be slid axially into engagement with either one of pinions 14, which mesh with broad pinions 8 in which the operative spindles 5 of two bands 3 can slide. Fig. 2 shows a form in which a spindle 18 directly drives the spindle 5 of the upper band 3 and the winding shaft 21 is geared by wheels 22 to the spindle 18 and the spindle 5 of the lower band 3. A cam plate 28 is slidable laterally by a lever 30 to put either wheel 22 into engagement with its spindle. In Fig. 5 is shown a means for optionally turning any one of three roller operating spindles 34, 35, 36. Gear-wheels 39 fixed on the shaft 37 are in continuous engagement with gear-wheels 38 loose on the spindles 34, 35, 36, but which can be coupled thereto by spring-pressed clutches 40 controlled by a sliding cam plate 45. In a modification of this form the cam plate is carried by the shaft 37, which is slidable, and in a further modification the loose gear-wheels are on the shaft 37 which is slidable to bring the required wheel into fixed engagement with the shaft. Fig. 9 shows a simple form in which the handle 69 is slidable on the shaft 21 to engage either the shaft clutch member 72 and so operate an upper band assembly spindle 18, or the clutch member 68 of a pinion 67 operating a lower band assembly spindle 18. Universal or like joints may be introduced between the main shaft and the supplementary operating spindles when these are disposed at an angle to the shaft other than 0‹ or 90‹, and a modification is described for operating two coaxial spindles.
