1319359 Toothed gearing BECKETT LAYCOCK & WATKINSON Ltd 6 Dec 1971 [22 Dec 1970] 60758/70 Heading F2Q [Also in Division G5] A roller sign comprises a frame made up of three plates 30, 32, 33 secured together by four rods 34; two jockey rollers 13 mounted between plates 30, 32; two spool type rollers 10, 11 mounted on spindles 39, 40, on a spring- mounted channel section 31, and on square spigots 37, 38 on the shafts 35, 36 of two gearwheels 16, 17; a train of rotatable gears 18, 19, 20 mounted on a carrier comprising two plates 21, the carrier being arranged to pivot about a shaft 44, which carries gear-wheel 19 together with a further gear-wheel 22 driven by a contrate gear 23 mounted on the shaft 46 of a driving handle (45), Fig. 4 (not shown); and a scroll of flexible information bearing material (not shown) which passes over the jockey rollers 13 and is wound around the spool type rollers 10, 11. The arrangement is such that, when the gear-wheels 18, 19, 20 are driven in one direction the reaction torque, between the train of wheels and the rollers and/or the drive means, pivots the carrier to a first position where one roller is driven, and when they are driven in the opposite direction the reaction torque pivots the carrier to a second position where the other roller is driven, and the gear on the second roller engages the gear train before the gear on the first roller disengages it, a pair of stops preventing disengagement from both roller gears at the same time. In various modifications the train of gears mounted on the carrier may comprise one, two, or three gears.
