Description

PATENTED MAR. 5, 1907.
J. E. RAINWATER. ADVERTISING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED OCT; 6, 1906.
p @q I p 9 p d 2 a I d m. H, fi I w UNITED srATEs PATENT OFFIGEQ 1 JAMES E. RAINWATEB, OF GEORGETOWN, SOUTH" CAROLINA ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 6, 1906- Serial No. 337,764-
Patented March 5, 1907.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JAMES E. RAINWATER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Georgetown, in the county of Georgetown and State of South Carolina,'have invented a new and useful Improvement in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to an advertising de vice; and the object of the device is to display for a certain length of time a particular advertisement, to withdraw the said advertisement and substitute a new one, which is also displayed for the same length of time, and to thus display in'succession a number of such advertisements, finally commencing the cycle over, thus repeating the entire series as many times as desired.
The invention consists of a casing containing a, traveling sheet upon which are displayed the advertisements, a'continuouslyoperated motor, and a particular manner ofgearing, whereby continuous rotation of the armatureshaft of the motor is transformed into an interrupted traveling of the advertising-sheet. v
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my dev1ce.' Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the casing. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing a portion. of the casing in section and the armature-shaft in cross-section,
. certain gearing being shown in elevation and partly in' dotted lines. Figs.-4 and 5 are detail views showing, upon an enlarged scale,
the manner of transmittingmotion to the advertising-sheet.
I In constructing one'of these devices I employ a casing A, whichmay be open upon one side, but which is preferably formed with a,-
transparent or glass side through which the advertising may be read; -Upon the casing is mounted a motor A,having a shaft'A whichparries a pulley A over which runs a belt A, and this belt drives a driven pulley A mounted upon ashaft A, which is journaled in a side of the casing A and which upon the inner side of the casing carries a pinion A A gear-Wheel B is mounted'upon the inside of the casing A and islprovi'ded'with a external gear B.
continuous internal gear B and a mutilated A shaft 0 extends 'trans versely across the casing and is provided with a 'sprocket-wheelC. The pnnon A meshes with the internal gear B, and the I sprocketwheel C engages the mutilated gear 13?. A plurality of rollers D are arranged in the casing, and I prefer to divide these rollers into up er and lower sets, over which a traveling s eet E travels, the sheet .passing alternately froma roller of one set to a roller of the other set. The sheet also travels over rollers D", arran ed in the up r corners ofthe casing, and also over the sh and it will be understood that the sheet E is carried by Y sprocket-chains E, which run over the sprocketsC'. It will also be clearly understood that, while I have only shown one end portion of the shaft 0, that the opposite end 1s a duplicate and that the sprocket C isarranged adjacent each end. It will also .be obvious that idle sprockets may) upon any of the rollers D or where it is e employed 'found necessary ,to support the sprocket: f "chains E, one of which isarranged adjacent each side edge ofthe sheet E. Suitable advertising matter of any kind may be printed or otherwise placed upon the sheet E.
It will be obvious from the construction shown and described that the gearwheel B will be continuously driven, but-that'owing to the mutilation of the gear B. the shaft U and roller E will be rotated only a'portion of the time, and'the mutilation of the gear B will be such that a single advertisement will be moved into position to be read during the traveling of the sheet andwill remain stationary for a certain length of time, and when the sheet resumes its traveling it will move untilv the advertisement displayed has been entirely removed from sightand a new one brought into pro er position. Having thus descri ed my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An advertising device, comprising acasing, a plurality of rollers therein, a sheet adapted to travel over said rollers, a gearwheel provided with a continuous internal gear and a mutilated external gear, a pinion ,meshing with theexternal gear, a sprocket- Wheel adapted to drive said sheet and meshing with the mutilated gear, and" means for.
