[Class 3 (i)] In destination indicators and like signs comprising a non-endless display band which is wound on and off two rollers by two clutches operated by a single driving spindle, the driving member of each clutch being mounted on the spindle in such a manner that the clutch members of one clutch are in engagement when the clutch members of the second clutch are disengaged, one part 18 of each clutch is formed in or on a collar or sleeve 17, Fig. 3, axially movable on the spindle 19, a pin and helical slot connection 25, 26 being provided for effecting engagement &c. of the clutches and a braking device 23 acting directly upon the pin or slot to retard rotary movement thereof during the engagement and disengagement of the clutch members. The sleeve 17 may carry the pin 26 and work in a slot in the casing 5, or the pin and slot may be part of the driving spindle and the sleeve respectively. In a modification the pin is located on a loose collar spring-pressed between two fixed collars surrounding the movable clutch sleeve. The brake may take the form of a plate spring partly embracing the sleeve, or of a padded ring fitted with a helical spring adjusted by a grub screw. Fig. 8 shows a form in which both the helical gear wheels 70 and the clutch members 72 are moved axially on the driving spindle 6. Loose collars 74 on the gear wheels are connected by a half-tube or a tube 75 held from rotation by pin and slot 76, 77. A helical slot 78 in the tube 75 receives a pin 79 on the spring-pressed collar 80 in which the spindle 6 can rotate. In a further modification the driving spindle is slidable, carrying with it the clutch members and a loose rotatable spring-pressed sleeve.
