[Class 68 (ii)] In a cellular sheet pile structure, the free end of the cell abutting an adjacent embankment &c., has a plane surface sufficiently rigid to withstand without deformation the thrust of the internal filling and the pull of the sheet pile surfaces attached to its ends. As shown, flexible sheet pile surfaces 1 are connected to transverse sheet pile partitions 2 spaced apart by an amount equal to the radius of the surfaces 1 so that the intersections are at 120 degrees. Where the structure abuts an embankment &c. 5, the sheet pile surfaces 6 are connected either to a sheet pile surface 12 supported by a stack of metal or reinforced concrete (e.g. prestressed) balks 7, or directly to anchorages at the ends of the balks 7 ; the balks 7 have locating holes 11 engaging vertical iron rods, and may vary in dimensions at different heights according to their loading. Alternatively, the rigid support may be of reinforced concrete cast in situ in sections or as a single block. The end surface may be tied to anchorage surfaces set in the structure, the tie rods passing through any partitions 2 which may intervene.
