Abstract

1,256,359. Cast-in situ energised concrete. M. R. JOHNS. 20 Feb., 1970 [26 Nov., 1968], No. 56086/68. Heading E1W. The compressive stress in a cast in situ reinforced concrete column 1 due to its own and/or surrounding structure dead weight is wholly or partly transferred onto one or more steel reinforcing bars 2 which may be held in compression by a nut 7 engaging an end plate 9 to which are welded anchoring members 10 embedded in the concrete. Similar anchoring members 10 are welded to a bottom plate 5. The bar or bars 2 are preferably postcompressed by means of jacks mounted on the end plate 9 and bearing on the end 4, the nut 7 being subsequently tightened and the jack released. An expanded polystyrene washer 13 set below the nut acts as a spacer compressed during jacking. The bars are surrounded by greased tapes or polystyrene sheeting to permanently or temporarily delay binding of the bar to the concrete. In multiple storey structures each storey may be postcompressed as it is connected by jointed rods running through to the foundation. The structure may also contain ordinary prestressed i.e. pretensioned reinforcement.
