[Class 96] The flow-box of a Fourdrinier paper-making machine is formed with telescopically-extending side walls adjusted at 10, 11 to vary the drainage area, forwardly of the breast roll 1 and apron 2, which is exposed to pressure of pulp in the flow-box 5, a lower box 42, beneath the wire-cloth 3, catching part of the drainage water. The vertical adjustment of the front wall of the flow-box 5 and of the lip 31 of the box are effected as illustrated, the lip 31 being of flexible metal or fibrous material adjusted at spaced positions across the machine. The front wall 18 may be stiffened against bending under the pressure of the pulp. Slices 17 are also vertically adjustable as illustrated, and are sprayed (86) to reduce foam. Indicators of the positions of adjusted parts, and also of the head of pulp between the slices, are provided. In a modification for slower-running machines and correspondingly lower heads of pulp, the stiffening of the front wall of the flow-box is unnecessary, and the box beneath the wire may be in two sections, both of which may be connected with a suction pipe. The box 42 may be pivotally mounted to permit slight movement when the wire-cloth is shaken.
