Abstract

731,383. Wet press sections of paper-making machines. MILLSPAUGH, Ltd. Sept. 18, 1953 [Sept. 20, 1952], No. 23642/52. Class 96. A pulp web 4, formed on a Fourdrinier paper-making machine and having a start-up strip cut by a water-jet 20, is couched by a suction roll 5 from the wire-cloth 1 to a felt 6 which carries it to the lower felt 10 of a suction wet press, the web 4 adhering to the upper roll 12 and its greater portion being doctored off as broke or as creped broke at 26 and being directed by an air jet 27 and a guard 28 through a gap G between a downward run of the felt 10 and the following wet press felt 18 &c., the broke falling into a hog-pit 29. The start-up strip may be temporarily collected by a doctor and tray 24, 23. In modifications, (1) the broke passes between two roughly parallel guards 28, the air jet being vertically over the gap G; (2) a conveyer is provided for transverse removal of broke; (3) a guide plate is provided to keep the broke away from the down-running felt 10; (4) there are two upper press rolls over a common lower press roll, from which the felt 10 runs straight down, the second upper press roll lying over the gap G and the broke-removing doctor acting against the lowest part of its surface.
