Abstract

740,479. Couching in paper-making machines. MILLSPAUGH, Ltd. March 24, 1954 [April 2, 1953], No. 9135/53. Class 96. The web 11 on the wire-cloth 10 of a papermaking machine passing over a suction couch roll 12 is transferred to a felt 16 as it travels towards a suction pick-up roll 18 which may also be the lowest roll of a stacked press. A felt guide roll 17 is adjustable from centre position A to B, and the pick-up roll 18 has limited adjustment so that in normal running, the felt 16 covers a small arc of the couch roll 12 to provide yielding pressure at first contact with the web, thus avoiding crushing the web as by small fibrous lumps. Prior to couching, the felt 16 may be just clear of the web which is cut repeatedly and the broke doctored off, a compartment 14 being under normal suction, and a compartment 15 being supplied with air pressure to transfer a leading-strip cut by a jet for starting up. When the full width of the web is running through the machine, the compartment 15 is changed to suction, to extract water from the wile-cloth and from the couch roll shell.
