Abstract
812,914. Couching in high-speed papermaking machines. WALMSLEYS (BURY) Ltd., and TEMPERLEY, J. March 2, 1956 [March 2, 1955], No. 6149/55. Class 96. The web on the wire-cloth W of a high-speed paper-making machine after passing beneath edge trimmers E and an automatic crosscutter A enters the couch press T, C where it is subjected to low suction L and high suction H, and couched with the aid of a continuous stream of low-pressure air supplied through a duct D, pipes X and a nozzle N, a backing-roll B opposite the nozzle N and at a small clearance from the wire-cloth W being driven at about the web speed. The web then passes over a guide roll G to a suction wet-press U, S, on an underfelt F; the inclination of the web approaching the felt F being as little as possible. The roll B may be covered with a hard rubber compositions or may be chromium-plated, and the roll G which normally runs at half the paper speed may be surfaced with polytetrafluorethylene, or chromium-plated. Intermittentlyoperated pressure air jets J deflect most of the web downwardly after a breakage, a lead-strip being left to run through the machine.
