Class 96 A suction compartment 19 extends between the couch roll 12 of a Fourdrinier paper-making machine and the line at which the web 11 is couched from the wire-cloth 10 on to a felt 18 with the aid of a suction roll 17. The couch roll 12 may have a suction zone 16 acting on the web 11, a suction zone 31 for exhausting or aiding in exhausting the compartment 19, and a zone 32 supplying air at high speed to clear perforations, of the roll 12, of water. Water may be drained at 30 from the compartment 19, e.g. at 15 to 20 ins. Hg suction. The compartment 19 may have adjustable end-walls, its sides being formed by parts of the surfaces of the couch roll 12, forward drive roll 14, and an intermediate roll 22, which may be substituted by a trough contacting the couch roll 12 and either the roll 14 or the wire-cloth 10. The roll 17 may be substituted by the lowest roll of a suction press contacting the wire-cloth intermediate of the rolls 12 and 14, in which case the slope of the wirecloth between the rolls 12, 14 is adjustable by moving the roll 14.
