In a paper or board making machine of the Fourdrinier type a fibrous web is transferred from an electrically driven forming section to a separately- and electrically-driven first press section without the use of intermediate means, the opposed runs of the forming wire and first press felt being in close proximity and the two sections so positioned that the web deviates through an angle greater than 90 degrees during the transfer, the wire and felt being driven at substantially equal speeds which can be maintained by interlocking the drives to the two sections. In the Figure, web formed on the wire 11, in a condition such that water can be extracted from it without undue suction at vacuum boxes or couch roll 14, is passed over a vacuum box and air jet 15, extending across the whole width of the machine, to loosen the web, which is then removed from the wire in the region X of a lead roll 13 situated in advance of and below the couch roll 14, and carried on the felt 12 towards a first suction press roll 16. Separate electrical drives (not shown) are applied to the sections through lead roll 13 and suction press roll 16, the wire and felt speeds being compared by a stroboscopic device 17 connected by flexible shafts to driven rolls of wire and felt adjacent the transfer point.
