Abstract

1336713 Papermaking WALMSLEYS (BURY) Ltd 25 Nov 1970 [6 Dec 1969 30 June 1970] 59695/69 and 31689/70 Heading D2A A paper or board making machine comprises twin wires 14, 16 extending over an impervious curved shoe 22, and a head box 24 for feeding stock between the wires. Doctors 26, 28 direct water into savealls 30, 32. Suction rolls 34, 36 facilitate transfer of a web formed between the wires to a wire or felt 10 which may be fed successively with further webs in a similar manner to form a multi-ply web, Fig. 2 (not shown), or which may be carrying webs formed previously on Fourdrinier machine and Inverform machines, Fig. 3 (not shown). In a second embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), suction boxes facilitate transferring the web to the wire or felt 10. In a third embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), a wire similar to the wire or felt 10 forms the bottom wire of the twin wires which after passing over the curved shoe pass between a suction roll and a suction box, and the headbox is pivotally mounted for adjustment of the height of the stock outlet. The top wire is tensioned by a device which is pivoted to a frame and actuated by a pneumatic cylinder to move a tensioning roller engaging the wire. A breast upper forming roller is supported pivotally and is adjustable by a screw jack, and the shoe is pivoted at its trailing end and is adjustably supported on a screw jack at its leading end. Downstream of the shoe a water-collecting device is adjustably mounted above the top wire and comprises a blade or scoop engaging the top wire and directing water upwardly through a channel discharging over a weir into a drained container subject to vacuum applied to the top of the container through passages formed between louvres preventing water splashing up the passages. The leading end of the shoe may have a curved or chisel-shaped nose. In a third embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), water is collected from the upper surface of the top wire and downstream by a suction box having a snout at its leading edge to collect free water and a high vacuum section at its rear.
