Abstract

717,251. Suction rolls accommodating leading-strips of paper-making machines. HEYS, R. C. Jan. 1, 1953 [Jan. 12, 1952] No. 982/52. Class 96. For starting or re-starting production of paper, the pulp web on a wire-cloth 10, after passing edge-trimming, water-jet cutters 24 encounters a further jet-cutter 26, e.g. at 1 ft. from one edge which forms a leading-strip picked off the wire 10 by a suction roll 16 embraced by a press felt 17, and which is lowered into operative position, the felt 17, &c. directing the strip into a wet press 20, 21, 22, whilst the rest of the pulp web travels with the wire 10 to a wash roll 14 from which it is removed by a doctor 42, and falls into a couch pit 15 with the trimmings from the cutters 24. A spray 51 may be provided. When the strip reaches the calender, the cutter 26 is traversed so that the full width of the web passes through the machine, and at the same time the operative width of the suction roll is progressively increased, its suction opening being bounded at one end by an adjustable wall and at the other by a wall traversed by a screwed rod. The cutter 26 projects through a slot in a hollow cylinder 25 which accommodates the traverse screw, a water supply pipe, and a guide rod, &c. An end wall of a suction box 43 in a lower press roll 22 may likewise be traversed. The various operations are effected with electric motors actuated in accordance with the setting of push buttons on a control panel 50. A multi-cylinder machine may be re-started similarly, a jet cutter, &c. being provided for each ply.
