Abstract
642,304. Cylinder paper-making machines. BELOIT IRON WORKS. Aug. 14, 1946, No. 24144. Convention date, Feb. 13. [Class 96] Paper pulp is deposited on to a travelling wire-cloth 38 at a zone Z of the forming cylinder of a paper-making machine from an enclosed flow-box under pressure from a pump 49, and after passing under an adjustable slice 54 is subjected to air pressure to avoid uneven fibre distribution &c. at high speed. In the air pressure zone which extends from the slice 54 to a suction couch roll 106, the pulp web meets a pick-up felt 128 which is adjustable between the full and dotted line positions shown in the drawing, by screw and worm gear &c. 79, 80, 81. The compressed air is supplied from a compresser 112 to the compartment S which the felt 128 enters between a sealing roll 85 and the couch roll 106, the sealing roll 85 coacting indirectly with a seal 105b, and directly with a seal 86, the latter being cushioned at 87. Water in the holes of the shell of the couch roll 106 is retained by suction in a compartment B until well clear of the felt 128, when it is flung off into a tray 126. A bellows conduit 108 allows the couch roll 106 to be moved, about pivots 98, without breaking the suction. The suction-box 105 of the roll 106 is drained through an extensible bellows conduit and a hollow box beam 110. White water draining through the wire cloth 38 and into the cylinder 22 falls through the lower part of the cylinder into the vat 24 and is taken off from a sump 24a. Excess pulp flowing over an adjustable, pivoted baffle 58 is drawn off at 61 and pumped at 63 back into the supply conduit. A shower 67 reduces foam, and washes the box C.
