Paper pulp, under hydrostatic pressure, from a flow spreader &c. is received at an inlet 45 stirred by a cylinder 81 rotated, e.g. at up to 3500 feet per minute by a motor 111 &c. and delivered to the wire-cloth 11 of a Fourdrinier machine above, e.g. an open type breast roll 137 where the fibres are felted before passing under a slice plate 118. The cylinder 81, which may be smooth or rough, and imperforate accelerates the stream of pulp, e.g. to the wire speed, the upper boundary layer of the stream being re-circulated in a compartment 79, and the lower boundary layer flowing backwardly over the breast roll. The bearings of the roll 81 are mounted eccentrically in eccentric mounted plates in the walls of the flow box to provide for adjustment of the roll 81, the sliceplate 118 being adjustable by screws 127, a table-plate 115 being adjustable and clamped by screws 10, and the breast roll 137 which may be slatted (143) and have suction compartments 150, 151, 152 exhausted at 166 &c. and compressed air compartments 148, 149 supplied at 161 &c. may be adjustable and the compartments 148 ... 152 &c. circumferentially adjustable. White water is doctored off at 211, and a tray (not shown, Fig. 9) under the upper run of the wire-cloth returns white water to the pulp-mixing tank which supplies the flow-box through an automatic pressure-regulating valve.
