Abstract

615,442. Stoppers. CROWLEY, P. J. Oct. 31, 1945, No. 28946. [Class 125 (iii)] A closure for a jar consists of a flexible disclike portion adapted to be distorted from a convex position (as viewed from above) during the process of forming a vacuum within the jar, and having an upwardly and outwardly inclined flange extending from the periphery of the disclike portion, with a rubber sealing ring for coacting with the inside edge of the mouth of the jar fitted around it. The central portion 1 of the closure, which may be of metal or plastic, is made springy and is normally convex as viewed from above. It is rounded at its periphery 2 and merges with a flared flange 3 which may be turned over at its edge 4. A rubber ring 6 is provided, and air pocket 7 may be formed between it and the flange 3. In use, the bottle is topped up with liquid and the centre portion 1 depressed to expel the excess.
