Abstract

504,303. Closures for jars. CANNING TOWN GLASS WORKS, Ltd., and FRANKLIN, J. S. Oct. 29, 1937, No. 29543. [Class 125 (iii)] A closure for jars and like containers has a spigot portion which enters the container neck 1 and carries a pliable rubber band 8 to form a seal; the container mouth is flared and so forms a ridge 3 which engages the band on the sloping part 7 of the spigot between the cylindrical portions 5, 6. An air tight closure is effected by the engagement of the ridge 3 and the band 8 under light pressure because of the wedging action of the part 7. If a partial vacuum is created in the container the closure member is drawn farther into the neck 1 to effect a tighter sealing, and the rubber band is pinched between the ridge 3 and the surface 6 of the closure. The band may be retained by a bead pressed up from the bottom edge of the spigot, and the flange 9 of the closure may have portions out out to render it flexible in order to compensate for any ovality in the mouth of the container. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the closure member 15 has a tapered portion 16 and a pliable ring 14 which acts as a seal against a concave seating 13 in the mouth of the jar 12.
