Abstract
592,870. Lock-mechanism. BERNARD, U., and TANN, Ltd., J. April 20, 1945, No. 9996. [Class 44] In a lever-type lock relative movement between the bolt stump and bolt due to the use of an improper key is utilized to operate a detector mechanism. The stump 4 is carried by a separate plate 1 mounted beside the tail 2 of bolt 3, and projects through a slot 5 in the tail into engagement with locking levers 15 of usual type, mounted on a fixed pin 6 passing through slots 7 in plate and bolt tail. When operated by proper key, bolt and plate move together. Use of an improper key to withdraw the bolt results in the stump and plate remaining held by one or more of the levers whilst the bolt receives a limited withdrawal movement. Plate 1 carries a lever 12 pivoted at 8 and normally lying along the top edge of the bolt tail in a recess, the lever having a depending projection 10 loosely engaging in a recess 11 in the bolt. The above-mentioned movement of the bolt to the right carries the left-hand wall recess 11 to tilt the lever to raised position in which a shoulder 18 at its free end engages a fixed abutment 19 to prevent complete withdrawal of the bolt. The lever is held in each of its two positions by a snapover spring 15 mounted on the plate and engaging one side or the other of an upwardly projecting arm 14 on the lever. The mechanism is reset by the proper key used to shoot the bolt further than normal by engaging a second talon 21 on the bolt tail, a fixed abutment 20 tilting the lever back to normal horizontal position. To prevent a short throw being given to the bolt by locking with an improper key, the bolt, instead of being directly operated by the key, is operated by a member 24 permanently mounted on a pivoted sleeve 22 within the lock casing, the sleeve carrying a disc 23 having a peripheral notch 27 engaged by a spring detent 26 to hold member 24 normally in register with the keyhole. The proper key operates the locking levers and also rotates members 22, 23, 24.
