Abstract

716,496. Coin controlled locks. AMERICAN LOCKER CO.. Inc. June 18, 1951, No. 14377/51. Class 27 Coin action: coin acts as abutment. Modifying mechanism for different numbers of coins. Caretakers. A lock in which a key cylinder is unlatched for rotation to locking position only when a coin is inserted has a separately formed coin magazine 60, Fig. 3, which is secured to the normal coin receiver 19 and is associated with a coin retaining mechanism 76. The latter retains a plurality of coins in the magazine and receiver, with the top coin in position to unlatch the locking cylinder, until a member 45 abutting the mechanism 76 is moved by movement of the locking cylinder to locking position. As illustrated the lock is formed by fitting an attachment to the lock described in U.S.A. Specification 1,640,605: in that lock a single coin inserted in the coin receiver 19 engages a tail 35, Fig. 5, of a lever 37 pivoted at 32 to prevent a catch 38 on the lever from engaging a notch 39 in a plate 41 secured to the locking cylinder. The attachment comprises a coin chute 60, Fig. 3, which serves to hold two coins and is secured by lugs 68 and screws 62, 64 within the coin receiver 19 after this has been enlarged so that a tail 45, Fig. 5, on a lever 46 no longer serves, as in the unmodified lock, to prevent coins from passing from the coin receiver. The first coin inserted rests on a stop 78, Fig. 3, on a lever 76 while a second coin rests on the first in position to engage the tail 35 of the lever 37. The usual counter registering the number of times the lock is operated is provided. Coin discharging mechanism. The coin supporting the stop 78 is normally held in position to support the coins by engagement of the tail 45 of the lever 46 with one arm 80 of the lever 76. When the locking cylinder is turned to locking position the cam plate 41, Fig. 5, engages a portion 49 of the lever 46 to turn it about its pivot 32 against the bias of a spring 24 so that the tail 45 clears the arm 80 and coins in the magazine and receiver can push aside the stop 78 to pass to the coin box. Preventing coins jamming. The coin retaining stop 78 co-operates with the bent lower end 86, Fig. 2, of a blade spring 82 secured to the frame of the lock by screws 84 and adapted to yield to permit a coin to pass should a third coin be forced through the coin slit.
