In a lock of the type in which a bolt 3 is operable by a key after movement of the key to align levers or other impediments 21 in the lock, the bolt 3 is movable by the key through a cam lever 7 pivoted in the lock casing, and means is provided engaging the cam lever 7 and the levers or other impediments 21 to prevent movement of the bolt 3 until the levers or impediments have been moved the appropriate amount by the correct key. As shown, the means for preventing movement of the bolt comprises a bell-crank lever 14 one end 16 of which is urged into engagement with a face 17 of the cam lever by a spring 18 and the other end 19 of which is engageable with slots 20 in the levers 21 when the latter have been aligned by initial movement of the key. Under these conditions further movement of the key is permitted to rotate the cam lever to a position in which one end 12 thereof engages a rear end of a slot 6 on the bolt and to move the latter to its unlocked position. Continued movement of the key allows the ends of the levers 21 to withdraw from the slots 20 and the levers return to their original positions under the action of a spring 26. The bolt may be of laminated form and may indude a pin for engagement with a slot in the cam lever, in place of the slot 6. The bolt may be of the pivoted type and the key may operate the mechanism through a cotatable bush. The levers may be slidable.
