[Class 44] The locking mechanism of an attache case and like hasp lock comprises a tumbler which can slide and rock, and a locking plate which can rock only, both being mounted on the same fixed peg carried by the lock case. The lock shown is of the kind comprising a shallow box-like casing a in which a bolt d (shown separately, Fig.5) also of shallow box-like form, is slidably guided. The bolt d accommodates the locking mechanism and has at one end a narrow nose-piece d<3> which extends across the usual slot in the cover-plate c to engage the usual loop projection on the hinged hasp-plate, not shown. The cover-plate closes both case and bolt, serves for attachment of the lock to the case, and has slidable thereon the usual key-holed knob, not shown, which is secured to the bolt as by rivets engaged in holes d<7> in the bolt, which also has an aperture d<6> serving as bearing for the end of the key shank. The bolt has a longitudinal slot d<8> through which extends the fixed peg a<3> secured to the casing, the slot having a lateral notch d<5>. The tumbler h (shown separate, Fig. 6) has a slot h<2> the right-hand end of which receives peg a<3>. One end h<4> is rounded. The other end has flats, forming a V-shaped nose h<3>. A spring f with coil f<2> mounted on a peg d<8> carried by the bolt, has one limb bearing against one or other of the flats to hold the tumbler in each of its two angular positions, the other limb bearing against the end wall of the bolt. The locking plate g (shown separate Fig. 7) is pivoted on peg a<3> and is off-set or joggled at its central position to accommodate the tumbler, its ends resting against the bolt surface. One edge of plate g has projections g<5>, g<6> to provide a gap g<4> engaged by the key bit. The opposite edge has a projection g' overlying the spring to keep it in engagement with the tumbler, and a bent-down tongue g<3> which extends through the left-hand end of slot h<2> and into the bolt slot. The tumbler, whilst free to slide, is rocked by the locking plate. Normally, tongue g<3> engages slot d4 so that the bolt is free to slide. In operation, the key bit first slides the tumbler and then engages and rocks the locking plate, the tumbler being rocked by the tongue g3. Clockwise rocking movement engages tongue g3 in notch d<5> to lock the bolt.
