Abstract
587,694. Handcuffs. RUTTIMAN, A. Nov. 15, 1944, No. 22606. [Class 44] In a handcuff of the kind having a swinging ratchet type bow, with locking means permitting swinging in closing direction only, free swinging in both opening and closing directions, and locking in the closed position, the toothed part 32 of the bow 20 is received in a housing 16 in which slides a toothed element 38, and key operated means including an eccentric 46 are provided between which and the element 38 are interposed resilient means such as a spring 48. In the position shown in Fig. 2, ratcheting motion in the closing direction only is possible, in the position shown in Fig. 3 the bow is locked, while in the third position the element 38 is lifted clear of the bow ratchet and the bow is freed. The bolt 44 carrying the eccentric 46 is rotated by a key, the bit of which engages in notches 52 in annular ridges on both 'sides of the bolt, so that the key can be inserted from either side of the housing.
