The invention relates to double-end cylinders for locks and of the type comprising two plugs 11, 12 at opposite ends of a cylindrical body 10, and a thrower 36 between the plugs, in which one plug 11 is associated with a key operated tumbler mechanism 16 and the other plug 12 is associated with a turn 20 continuously connected to the thrower, the key being arranged to couple the associated plug to the thrower 36 through a clutch means. According to the invention, the clutch means comprises a driven element 25 positively connected to the second plug 12 and spring biassed to a rest position, and a driving element 41 positively connected to the first plug 11 and spring biassed to a disengaged position relative to the driven element, the arrangement being such that insertion of the key 47 Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) into the first plug 11 moves the driving element 41 against its spring 44 into engagement with the driven element 25, if the elements are located in relative operative positions, but causes the elements to abut to move the driven element 25 from its rest position if the elements are located in relative in-operative positions, subsequent rotation of the first plug 11 in the latter case taking place independently of the other plug 12 and taking up lost motion after the clutch elements 41, 25 have reached their relative operative positions whereupon the driven element 25 moves to its rest position and the driving element 41 assumes its engaging position, limited lost motion being permitted between the elements when they are in operative relative position. As shown, in which the body 10 is of generally oval cross-section, the driven element comprises a shank 26 slidably and non rotatably mounted in the plug 12 by a pin and slot connection 23, 27 against a spring 45, and a head 28 providing diametrically opposed flats 30 which are engageable with a bore 39 in the thrower 36, faces 31 and 32 and a pair of shoulders 33 and 34 which permit rotation of the element 41 by the key 47 in the position where a projection 43 on the element 41 abuts the face 31 when the head 28 is in its inoperative position relative to the element 41, and in the position when the projection 43 is subsequently engageable, with lost motion, with either of the shoulders 33, 34, upon continued rotation of the key. The plug is slidably and non-rotatably retained in the housing 10 by a pin and groove connection 22, 21. The element 41 is slidably and non-rotatably mounted in the plug 11 against the spring 44 and the arrangement of the parts is such that the thrower 36 is rotatable through 180 degrees and that a 360 degree movement of the key will bring the tongue 40 of the thrower to one or the other of its extreme position depending on the direction of rotation of the key.
