Abstract

1344439 Door latch mechanisms FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 8 March 1972 [13 April 1971] 10771/72 Heading E2A A latch mechanism for a door comprises a housing 19 having a cylindrical bore 21 in which are mounted rotatably a rotary pawl 43 and a cylinder lock mechanism 45 which are operatively coupled through a lost motion connection. A latch bolt 25 is pivotally mounted on the exterior of the housing and is provided with a cam portion 34 which under spring biassing of the bolt 25 is urged into a slot 35 in the housing. In the latching position of the bolt 25 the cam portion engages a surface of the pawl 43 which thus blocks movement of the bolt into its unlatching position under its spring biassing. The pawl 43 however, is provided with a slot which is movable by rotation of the pawl into alignment with the slot 35 in the housing and hence the cam portion 34 of the bolt to allow the bolt to pivot into its unlatching position. The cylinder lock mechanism is rotated by its key from its locked position to a position at which it entrains the pawl and thereafter rotation of the cylinder lock mechanism rotates the pawl. The pawl 43 is spring loaded so that it is biassed towards its bolt blocking position and the cylinder lock mechanism is spring biassed only as far as its position at which it entrains the pawl. In the construction disclosed the cylinder lock mechanism 45 is prevented from being turned from the position at which it entrains the pawl to its locked position unless the key is inserted in the mechanism by a step in the wall of the bore of the housing (Fig. 5, not shown). The lost motion connection comprises projections 59 (61, Fig. 4, not shown) on the cylinder lock mechanism working in a recess 58 in the adjacent face of the pawl and on a projection (65) on the adjacent face of the pawl respectively.
