1482363 Emergency exit latching mechanism &c EMHART INDUSTRIES INC 10 Sept 1974 [20 Sept 1973] 39464/74 Heading E2A An emergency exit latch and actuator assembly comprises an elongate frame to be mounted transversely on the inner face of an outwardly opening door 12, Fig. 5, a latch bolt 18 pivoted thereto at 46, and a retractor 58 also pivoted thereto at 60 having a first part 64 engageable with latch bolt 18 and a second part 62 engagable with an actuator 82 on panic bar 22 so that movement of bar 22 pivots retractor 58 and bolt 18 to retract it. As shown, Figs. 4, 5, bolt 18 has a pin 48 in a movement-limiting slot 50 and is biassed to its projecting position by torsion spring (52, Fig. 3, not shown) on pivot pin 46 and against pin 48 and the frame. Bolt 18 has an abutment surface 54 and an arcuate groove 52 to abut or allow passage of movable blocker element 96. The panic bar 22 is pivoted to channel element 68 at (76, 78, Figs. 7-9 not shown) both pivots mounting a torsion spring (80) biassing bar 22 outwardly so that, on depression, bar 22 moves arcuately inwardly. The bar 22 may be retained in a depressed position by dogging device (23, Figs. 7, 8). A housing (112) on bar 22 contains a part 116 rotatable by insertion of a hexagonal key through aperture (122) in bar 22 into hexagonal slot 120 so that eccentric cam (118) is rotated to engage cross member (124) causing arcuate, depressing movement of bar 22 until cam (118) engages a slot in member (124). A detent mechanism (126) retains bar 22 in either its dogged or undogged position. A deadlocking mechanism 24, Fig. 4, comprises an auxiliary latch bolt 26 mounted on the end of pivot pin 46 and biassed to a projected position by a torsion spring 86 on pin 46. A deadlocking lever 88 is pivotable on a stud 90, biassed counterclockwise to the locking position by a torsion spring 92, and carries the blocker 96. A control pin 100 on bolt 26 engages a cam slot 102 in lever 88 to urge the lever to its unlocking, Fig. 4 position when bolt 26 is in its projecting position. When the door is closed, bolt 18 engages striker 14 before bolt 26, which holds blocker 96 in its unlocking position, so that blocker 96 enters groove 52 before bolt 26 is engaged, thereby releasing the deadlocking lever 88 to move to its locking position. When closed, bolt 26 is held retracted by abutment (106, Fig. 2 not shown) on striker 14 so that lever 88 is in its locking position. However, a drive pin 108 on retractor leg 62 engages a cam slot 110 in the other leg of lever 88, so that, on depression of bar 22, lever 88 is pivoted clockwise to its unlocking position. A latch bolt release mechanism 127 may be operated from outside the door and comprises a slide 129, Fig. 6 with its end 134 engaging retractor leg 66, a key-operated lock cylinder 128 and a rotary plug 130 having a notch 135 to engage a drive pin 133 on slide 129 so that counterclockwise rotation of plug 130 moves slide 129 to the left, Fig. 6 and retracts bolt 18 by means of retractor 58. If the bolt 18 is held retracted, the key may then be turned clockwise so that a pin 138 on plug 130 is moved to the end of slot 136 in slide 129 to lock the bolt 18 retracted. The bolt may also be actuated from outside by a push button operating through lever 164, Fig. 12, and pivoted lever 146, surface 152 of which engages extension 108a of pin 108 on retractor leg 62. Lever 164 may be locked by engagement of a locking bolt, operated by lock (170, Fig. 10, not shown), in a locking recess 168 in the lever arm.
