Abstract

1355188 Keys; cylinder locks C E MARSHALL (WOLVERHAMPTON) Ltd 7 Oct 1971 [12 Sept 1970] 43691/70 Heading E2A A key, for a cylinder type lock mechanism, is formed with a plurality of projections 12 in alignment with each other in a plane parallel with the axis of the key, the projections being adapted to operate the tumblers of the lock mechanism, and the free end 14 of the shank 11 of the key being formed with a lateral projection 15 offset laterally from the plane of the projections. As shown, the key has projections 12, 15 on each longitudinal edge of the shank. The lock, for securing the steering column of a motor vehicle, comprises spring- loaded tumblers normally projecting from a barrel 18 and into grooves in a sleeve 20 and a tumbler 16 disposed at the outer end of the barrel. Insertion of the key into the barrel causes one of the projections 15 to engage a shoulder of the tumbler 16 which at this time is disposed wholly within the barrel and when the key is fully home in the barrel a fixed abutment 29 on the barrel, on rotation of the latter, moves along a cam surface 31 of a recess 27 in the sleeve 20 whereby the sleeve is moved axially inwardly against a spring 30 so that the tumbler springs outwardly to prevent the sleeve being returned to the initial position thereof; turning of the barrel causes a cam 21 to engage the shoe 23 of a spring- loaded bolt 22 to withdraw the bolt from engagement with the column of a steering wheel and the abutment 26 on the sleeve holds the bolt in the retracted position. To return the bolt to the projected position the barrel is rotated and the key withdrawn so that the projection 15 engages the shoulder of and to withdraw the tumbler 16 and to allow the sleeve 20 to be moved outwardly by the spring 30 and the abutment 26 to disengage from the shoe 23.
