The tumlbler is a fiat and slotted plate and is formed with a forward V edge and with a rear curved edge, and it is arranged to both slide and revolve upon the peg of the back plate, while the stump of the looking plate passes freely through the slotting of the tumbler.
A wire spring, comprising two arms and a coupling coil, is mounted on a stud of the bolt for its one arm to operate against an end of the bolt and its other arm against the forward V edge of the tumbler, this spring being common to bolt, tumbler, and locking plate. The tumbler lies against the inner face of the bolt, and the one arm of the spring lies also against this face and against the V edge of the tumbler, and extending underneath a short arm of the locking plate, which at its ends abuts against the inner face of the bolt and is ofiset between its ends to accommodate the fiat-plate tumbler.
The invention will be clearly understood by the description hereinafter appearing with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the slidable-bolt fastening member.
Fig. 2 is an elevation similar to Fig. 1, but with the front plate removed.
3 ZCl'aims; (01. 70467) The b ac k platem, ee shanow oblong-tea ime lfl ah is pl o-vide'd with a rigiu peg aaatandnrgus ter. which is 'd-f imam-a1 enstructiom:

A locking plate g has a hole 92 through it to pivot it upon the peg a3 of the back plate, and to the one side of said hole a rigid stump g3 turned inwardly at right angles, while to the other side of said hole 92, and oppositely substantially to the stump, is gap g4 providing two distanced lugs g5 g6 between which the bit of the key operates for rocking the locking plate; while further said locking-plate has, adjacent the stump g3 a projection g1 under which the one branch of the spring engages to assist in holding the spring in position within the slidable bolt d. It will be clear from Fig. 6 that the middle-part of the locking plate is ofiset at g8, to accommodate a tumbler h.
The tumbler his flat-plate-like, is slotted at 71.2, and is formed with a forward V edge at 723, and at M with a rear and outardly curved edge, the forward portion of the slotting to accommodate the stump 93 of the locking-plate g, and the rear portion to accommodate the rigid peg a3 on the back-plate.
It is therefore obvious that the tumbler It lies against the inner surface of the slida'ble bolt, as also do the ends of the locking-plate at each side of the offset, and that both tumbler and plate engage that part of the peg a3 extending above the slotting, so that the bit of the key can operate upon both tumbler and locking plate, the
3 former revolving and sliding about the peg, and the latter revolving only about said peg.
The front plate c has the usual opening 02 across which the bolt nose d2 extends, and the knob e, having a suitable key-hole e2 through it, is connected to the bolt at the riveting points (27, so that when the bolt is unlocked the sliding of the knob e effects the withdrawal of the bolt against the operation of the spring 1.
The material parts described and illustrated are relatively arranged with the bolt (1 engaging the box formation of the back-plate and the peg 13 of the latter engaging the slot d4 of the bolt. The tumbler is positioned within the bolt so that the peg a3 engages the rear portion of the slot hi, and the locking-plate is applied over the tumbler with its hole 2 engaging the peg a3 and its stump g3 engaging the forward portion 6f the slot 112 of the tumbler; the arrangement being that in the locked positioning of the fastening the stump 93 engages the side notch d in the slot d4 of the bolt, the stump g3 constantly engaging slot of the tumbler.
The action is as follows: in locking the bit of the key operatesthe curved rear edge m1 of the tumbler to slide the latter forward a short distance against spring action operating against the V edge h3, and then immediately picks up the locking-plate g to rock same together with the tumblerso that the stump of the locking plate, which projects through the slotting, engages the notch (15 of the bolt. In unlocking, the tumbler is first moved to slide it slightly, and afterwards the locking-plate is rocked together with the tumbler to again bring back the stump g3 of the locking plate into the straight part d4 of the slot in the bolt, when the latter is free to be drawn back against the action of the spring f.
The principal features in the construction and arrangement hereinbefore described is that both tumbler and locking plate are mounted upon the same peg of the back plate, the former to slide and revolve, and the latter to revolve only, and that there is a silent wipe-over spring action in locking and unlocking in consequence of a straight limb 4 of the spring f'operating against the V edge 712 of the tumbler and against one face only of the V, although the action of locking and unlocking can be felt from the key action.
What I claim is:
1. 'A fastenings member of the kind described, wherein both tumbler and locking-plate are mounted about the same rigid peg of the back plate, the tumbler to slide and rock about said peg, and the plate to rock only about said peg, said plate having a locking stump to engage, permanently, the slotting of the tumbler and also adapted to engage a bolt-locking notch at the one side of a longitudinal slot in the bolt, said bolt, tumbler, and locking plate being suitably spring loaded.
2. A fastenings member of the kind described, wherein both numbler and locking-plate are mounted about the same rigid peg of the back plate, the tumbler to slide and rock about said peg, and the plate to rock only about said peg, said plate having a locking stump to engage, permanently, the slotting of the tumbler and also adapted to engage a bolt-locking notch at the oneside of a longitudinal slot in the bolt, said bolt, tumbler and locking plate being spring loaded by a double armed spring operating between one end of the bolt and an edge of the tumbler.
3. A fastenings member in accordance with the preceding claim, and wherein the tumbler is formed with a forward V edge, and a double armed and coil-coupled wire spring operates between thesone end of the bolt and the V edge of the tumbler in manner described.
