My invention aims to provide improvements in multiple fastener sliders and locking means for the same.
In the drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a multiple fastener installation. showing my improved slider locking means in locking position;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the slider and combination pull-tab and lock in unlocked position, and part of the lock being broken away to expose the latch and cooperating means; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section taken on the line H of Figure 1 to show the latch in locking position.
While I am aware of the fact that padlocks have been used in various ways and combinations, 20 with sliders of the class illustrated, for locking purposes, I believe that my combination of pulltab and padlock provides a simple eftlcient unit which is far superior to any heretofore disclosed. In fact, my structure is adapted to provide a slider construction which can be locked when desired without cooperation with any other part or parts afixed to the installation and it is positive in operation because it has locking means positively engaging the multiple fasteners and other means for holding the locking means in such position. Furthermore, the construction of the slider and associated parts is simple and involves a minimum of parts.
Referring now to the specific embodiment of my invention selected forillustration, there is shown (Figure 1) portions of a pair of stringers l and 2 at the adjacent edges of which are the usual interengaging fastener elements 3. The slider device includes the usual channel member 4 for engaging and disengaging the fasteners 3 and a pull-tab 5 hinged to the said channel member.
The means for locking the slider in position to prevent operation comprises fastener-engaging locking means 6 carried by the pull-tab 5, a riblike part '1 secured to the front face of the slider and a padlock structure formed as a part of the pull-tab 5.
The rib-like part '1 is a thin plate attached edgewise to the front face of the channel member 4 and extending the length thereof. It may be formed and attached in any suitable manner. A notch 8 is cut in the part 7 and the pull-tab 5 is pivoted therein. A slot 9 is provided in the pull-tab to permit swinging movement thereof relative to the part 7. An aperture 10 is provided through the part 7 near its lower end for reception of the latch 11 of the padlock structure, as best illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4. The padlock structure maybe of any suitable design preferably operable by a key. It comprises the latch 11 normally pressed into locking position by a. spring 12 (Fig. 3) and having a cam portion 13 adapted to be engaged by the key to move the latch into unlocking position. I
While one fastener-engaging member 6 may be used to provide the locking means, I prefer to use two, one at each side of the part '7 adjacent to the pivot point of the pull-tab 5. These fastener-engaging members 6 (Figs. 2 and 3) pass through apertures 14-44 in the channel member 4 so that they may engage between the fastener members 3 on each of the stringers 1 and 2.
When it is desired to lock the slider so that the fastener members 3 cannot be separated the pull-tab is pressed into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 where the members 6-6 engage between the fastener members 3. Then the latch 11, having the tapered surface, automatically snaps through the hole 10 in the part 7 to hold the tab in locked position. By inserting a key through the keyhole in the padlock structure the latch may be moved against the pressure of the spring 12 to unlock the latch. The pull-tab then may be swung to a position as shown in Fig. 3, thereby removing the members 6--6 from between the fastener elements 3. The slider then may be moved longitudinally relative to the fastener elements and stringers as desired.
My combined pull-tab and padlock is simple, neat and eflicient. It is particularly desirable because all of the parts are assembled and ready for use at any time. To lock the slider in a desired position it is merely necessary to push the pull-tab downwardly and thereby snap the latch 11 into engagement with the rib part '7. Furthermore, the design of the parts is such that the latch is not accessible for operation except with a key.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereby, because the scope of my invention is best defined by the following claims.
I claim, a
1. Amultiple operated fastener installation comprising, in combination, two stringers having rows of cooperating fasteners on adjacent edges, a slider device movable over the fasteners to engage and disengage them and a pull-tab attached to the slider for moving it, and locking means associated with the pull-tab and operable by said pull-tab to lock the slider against movement relative to the fasteners, and key-operated locking means carried partly by the slider and partly by the pull-tab and operable to lock the pull-tab in a predetermined position relative to the slider.
2. A multiple operated fastener installation comprising, in combination, two stringers having rows of cooperating fasteners on adjacent edges, a slider device movable over the fasteners to engage and disengage them and a pull-tab attached to the slider for moving it and fastener-engaging means associated with the pull-tab and operable to lock the slider relative to the fasteners, said pull-tab being constructed in the form of a padlock and locking means provided partly by the pull-tab padlock structure and partly by the slider device and arranged to interengage for locking the fastener-engaging means in looking position as desired.

A multiple operated fastener installation comprising, in combination, two stringers having rows of cooperating fasteners on adjacent edges, a slider device movable over the fasteners to engage and disengage them and a pull-tab attached to the slider for moving it, and'fastener-engaging means associated with the pull-tab and operable by the pull-tab to lock the slider against movement relative to the fasteners and locking means provided partly by the pull-tab and partly by the slider and arranged to inter-engage to lock the pull-tab in a pomtion whereby the fastenerengaging means is held in locking position, said locking means comprising an apertured rib on the slider and a manually operable latch carried Ibis; the pull-tab and entering the aperture in the 4.
