My invention aims toprovide improvements in multiple fastener-sliders and lock ing means for the same.
In the drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my invention Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of a multiple fastener installation showing my improved slider locking means in locking position, the padlock being shown in dotted lines to prevent parts being obscured;
Fig. 2 is an enlargedsection taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1; and
Figs-3 is a side elevation of the installation shown in Figure 1, the padlock being removed and the pull. tab being shown in position for operation of the slider.
While I am aware ofthe fact that padlocks have been used in various waysand combinations, with sliders of the class illustrated, for locking purposes, I believe that my combination of elements provides a simple eflicient unit which is far superior to any heretofore disclosed. In fact, my strucprovide a slider con struction which can be locked when desired without cooperation with any other part or parts affixed to the installation and it is positive in operation because it has locking means positively'engaging the multiple fasteners and other means for holding the looking means in such position. Furthermore, the construction of the slider and associated parts is simple and involves a minimum of parts.
Referring now to the specific embodiment of my invention selected for illustration, there is shown (Figure 1) portions of a pair of stringers 1 and 2 at the adjacent edges of which are the usual interengaging fastener elements 3. The slider device includes the usual channel member 4 for engaging and disengaging the fasteners 3.
The means for locking the slider in position to prevent operation comprises fastener-engaging locking means 5 carried by a pull tab face of the slider, and a padlock 8, all shown in Figs. 1 and 2.,
The rib-like part 7 is. a thin plate attached edgewise to the front face of they 6, a rib-like'part 7, at the front channel member 4 and extending the length thereof. Itis held in fixed position by an attaching element 9 at one end and an attaching element .10 at the other end. The
latter extends through an upstanding lip 11 at the lower edge of the channel, as best shownin Fig. 2. Av notch 12 is cut in the part 7 and the pull tab 6 is pivoted therein.
A slot 13 is provided in the pull tab to permit swinging movement thereof relative to the part 7. An aperture 14 is provided through the part 7 at a point which is spaced about the thickness of the pull tab 6 from the front face of the channel member 4.
\Vhile one fastener-engaging member 5 Y may be used to provide the locking means, I prefer to use two, one at each side of the part 7 adjacent the pivot point of the pull tab. These fastener-engaging members 5 (Figure 1) pass through apertures 15-15 in the channel 4 so that they may engage be tween the fastener members 3 on each of the stringers 1 and 2.
When it is desired to lock the slider so that the fastener members 3 cannot be separated the pull tab is pressed into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 where the members 5-5 engage between the fastener members 3. Then the padlock 8 or other suitable-device is inserted through the hole 14 in the part 7 to hold the tab in locked' position. Upon removal of *the padlock 8 the pull tab may be swung to a position as shown in Fig. 3, thereby removing the members 5-5 from between the fastener elements 3. The slider then may be moved longitudinally relative to the fastener elements and stringers.
My device is particularly desirable on devices which require locking, because it is simple and positive in operation and the installation is exactly the same as other multiple operative fastener installations where no locking is required.
While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited. thereby, because the scope of my invention is best defined by the following claim- I claim:
A locking slider structure comprising, in combination, a channel device for engaging and disengaging opposed series of fastener elements adapted to pass therethrough, a pull tab attached to the channel device, fastener element engaging locking means as-' sembled as a part of the slider structure and operable "by the pull tab to locktheslider against movement relative to a the;
fastener elements when the pull tab is in a predetermined position, a one-piece riblike part substantially free of lateral r0- jections rigidly secured-to and exten ing substantially the entire length of the chan-V nel device and extending away from one channel thickness ofthe pull tab and a locking member passing through said apertureand holding said pull tab securely against the face of the channel, thereby to hold the locking means and the pull tab in slider locking position.
