My invention relates to slide fasteners and \particularly to means for preventing unintended movement of the slider resulting in opening up of the fastener.
It is an object of the present invention to provide improved means for locking the slider against unintended movement in one direction. It is a well-known fact that as Slide fasteners are commonly made, a slider or camming member is employed which has a Y-shaped channel for receiving the fastener elements as the slider passes along the stringers. Unless some special locking means is employed for holding the slider in position when the fastener is closed, it can be readily shiftedby a lateral pull on the stringers in the locality of the slider and thus permit opening of the fastener. My invention aims to provide a very sim le locking means which will automatically unctio-n without attention from the operator to prevent unintended opening movement of the slider and at the same time, allow it to be shifted in either direction by a force applied longitudinally.
A more specific object of the inventionis to provide improved means for locking the slider, comprising a notch or recess in the -slider immovable relative thereto for engaging parts of the fastener stringers.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will more fully appear during the course of the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying shown for purposes of illustration one embodiment which my invention may assume in 'ractice. In these drawings: ig. 1 is a plan view of a portion of a slide fastener embodying my invention with the slider shown in section.

Such a fastener usually 'comprises a pair of fastener stringers having fabric portions 6 and 7 and rows of spaced interlocking fastener elements 8 and 9 along their adjacent longitudinal edges which are adapted to be successively brought together and progressively inter- The form of sli er illustrated comprises spaced upper-and lower wings 11 and 12 respectively connected by an integral wedging and spacing portion 13 and a pull member 14 connected to the upper wing of the slider in such a manner as to allow both relative longitudinal and pivotal movement. The lateral edges of the slider wings 11 and 12 are bent inwardly to provide the guide flanges 15 and 16 on opposite sides of the slider and these flanges form in conjunction with the wedging portion 13, a substantially Y-shaped channel having diverging portions 17 and 18 for receiving the fastener elements8 and 9.
In carrying out my invention,'I preferably provide cooperating means on the interior of said slider and on the fastener stringers for preventing unintentional movement of the slider along the stringers. In one specific embodiment a plurality Of integral notches 17 and 19 opening inwardly toward the diverging portions of the slider channel are formed in theflanges 15 and a plurality of similar notches 20 and 22 are formed in the flanges 16. It will be understood that if desired, the locking function may be accomplished with only notches in one set of flanges but preferably notches are formed in all of the flanges. An important feature of the construction is the angle of the upper side 21 of each of the notches which is preferably made forty to seventy degrees with the longitudinal center line of the slider. This side of the notch forms substantially a right angle with the longer side of the notch 22.

The diverging between the fastener elements and prevent any shifting movement of the slider in an opening direction which would ordinarily take place if the inner surfaces of the guide flanges were smooth. The term laterally is used here to denote movement in the plane of the stringers as distinguished from a movement perpendicular to the stringers.
Now, it will be seen that the angle of the sides 21 of'the notches is such as to permit the slider to be shifted in either direction by a force applied on the pull in a longitudinal direction even though the fastener elements are engaged in the notches and the stringers are under considerable strain. The fastener elements are simply cammed up out-of the notches 19 and 20. On the other hand, the notches are so designed that when a lateral pull is applied to the stringers with the slider in a closed position, the slider is effectually locked against movement and the greater the strain on the stringers, the more positive will be the locking efiect.
As a result of my invention it will be observed that a very simple and effective locking means has been devised which will require very little change in methods and machinesnowused formaking fastener stringers and sliders, and which can be made at practically no extra cost in addition to that of the standard non-lockin fastener.
While I have in this application specifically described one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this embodiment is merely for the purpose of illustration and descri tion and that various other forms may e devised within the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a slide fastener, a pair of stringers having spaced fastener elements along their adjacent longitudinal edges, a slider movable along said stringers to control said fastener elements, and means for preventing moveing relatively immovable locking means carried by the slider for entering laterally in a plane parallel to the stringers into the s aces between the fastener elements to lock 2. In a slide fastener, a pair of stringers having spaced fastener elements along their adjacent longitudinal edges, a slider movable along said stringers to control said fastener elements, and locking means carried by the slider and immovable relative thereto for automatically engaging fastener elements on one of said stringers to lock the slider against movement in the opening direction.
' 3. In a slide fastener, 21 pair of stringers having spaced fastener elements along their adjacent longitudinal edges, a slider movable along said stringers to engage and disengage said fastener elements, and means carried by the slider and immovable relative thereto to engage between said fastener elements and lock the slider against movement in one direction.
4. In a slide fastener, a pair of stringers having. spaced fastener elements along their adjacent longitudinal edges, a slider movable along said stringers to engage and disengage said fastener elements, said slider' having a notch formed therein for receiving one of said fastener elements at any point in the travel "of said slider to lock the slider against movement in one direction.
5. In a slide fastener, a pair of stringers having spaced fastener elements along their adjacent longitudinal edges, a slider movable along said stringers to engage and disengage said, fastener elements, said slider havinga plurality of spaced notches formed therein for receiving a plurality of said fastener elements to lock the slider against movement in the opening direction.
.6. In a slide fastener, a pair of stringers having spaced fastener elements along their adjacent longitudinal edges, a slider movable along said stringers to engage and disengage said fastener elements, said slider having a Y-shaped channel therein for receiving the fastener elements, and a notch in said slider opening into the Y-shaped channel for receiving one of said fastener elements to lock the slider against movement in one direction.
7. In a slide fastener, a pair of stringers having spaced fastener elements along their adjacent longitudinal edges, aslider movable along said stringers to engage and disengage said fastener elements, said slider having spaced wings adapted to lie on opposite sides of the fastener elements and flanges at the outer edges of one of sa d wings for guiding the slider along the stringers, and relatively immovable means formed on one of said flanges for automatically engaging one of said fastener elements to lock the slider against movement in the opening direction when a lateral pull is applied to the stringers in the locality of the slider.

10. In a slide fastener, a pair of strin ers having spaced fastener elements along t eir adjacent longitudinal edges, a slider movable along said stringers to engage and disengage said fastener elements, and means carried by the slider and immovable relative thereto to engage the fastener elements and automatically lock the slider at any point in the travel of said slider when a lateral pull is a lied to the stringers in the locality of the s11 er, said slider belng. movable in either direction by a force applied longitudinally of the stringers even when the stringers are under strain;

In aslide fastener, a pair of strin ers having spaced fastener elements along t eir adjacent longitudinal edges, a slider movable along said stringers to engage and disengage said fastener elements, said slider having an inwardly opening notch formed therein for engagement with the fastener elements,
the walls of said notch being formed at such an angle as to permit movement of the slider along said stringers to control said fastener elements, said slider comprising spaced wings and an integral connecting portion providing a Y-shaped channel to receive said fastener elements, and cooperating locking means integral with the interior walls of said channel engaging said fastener elements for preventing unintended opening movement of the slider.
